Introduction

It all comes down to how your customer perceives you and your digital presence. No matter how skilled you are, it doesn’t matter. In a noisy digital world, you need a strategy. This helps you stand out as a saree drapist and be yourself. A bridal customer signed a contract to drape some sarees and lehengas. This happened because of my personality. Here, I do not have a personal brand or a million followers on Instagram. She had an honest consultation call. The right questions helped her hire the right professional. Simple, but it takes practice to sell your services without being salesy.

These ideas helped me sell saree draping services and ease couples’ worries about vendors. Remember, being yourself is a tip to follow while asking all these questions below. The more open-ended questions, the better to understand customers’ perception of the service.

What is your current struggle with saree draping?

Without knowing the pain point of the customer, you cannot solve the problem. In general, it is common to assume the customer doesn’t know how to drape a saree and that is the reason to hire you. They may have skilled friends and family, but they still need a pro like you for their big day. I have had customers who needed help only to pleat the sarees and not really draping them. So, it is worth asking what their problem. More they talk, the better it is to see how you can help.

What happens if we do not work together?

The intention here is to thoroughly understand their plan B and avoid causing them to panic. Depending on your market, you could be a unicorn or one in a hundred saree drapists near you. And that doesn’t matter. All you need to know is what matters to them when hiring you as a saree drapist. So, the answer to this question means a lot to you as a saree drapist as much as it does for the customer.

What matters most in hiring a saree drapist?

I have had surprising responses from customers here. One of the brides I worked with told me that she needed someone who has the least number of tasks for her. For example, signing a contract -> paying online -> getting the saree draped. She didn’t want to talk a lot. I made a detailed questionnaire. It helps me gather the information I need right after the contract. This way, I can get started faster with minimal calls. So, if you are adaptable it gets easier to serve clients without bending backwards.

Do you have a wedding planner?

Working with clients who had no wedding planner was challenging. This question helped me avoid a lot of headaches before I chose to work with the couple. When couples do not have a wedding planner, you do end up doing the wedding planner’s job. But some couples are very organized and do not need a wedding planner. This question shifts the conversation. It helps you learn about couples’ preferences and processes. Here, you will charge according to the labor you need to put in. Service-based businesses require hourly rates to maintain proper margins, unlike product businesses.

Can you tell me more about the fabric type of the saree?

Hardly 3 out of 10 customers know the right fabric type in my experience. But as a saree drapist, the more you know the fabric, the better it is to analyze the number of hours of labor. Yes, there are millions of fabric types. But if you’ve draped 200+ sarees, it gets easier to find the fabric family and work your labor hours. Your labor hours, production cost, and profit margins give the best pricing strategy. You are the expert here. This question lets you teach the customer and set clear expectations. Remember the honest conversation I wrote at the beginning of the article. This question gets you there depending on your confidence and expertise.

Conclusion

Let’s face it. It takes so many hours of practice to provide a seamless customer experience. You as a saree drapist are not only a salesperson but also an artist. Both are two different professions, and it is hard to excel in both to run a profitable business. If there are any questions that I missed but added value in your consultation calls, share them here.
